The Hot Chocolate recipe of your dreams! This dairy-free hot chocolate is rich, creamy, made in just five minutes and might just be the best you've ever had. Made with real chocolate, plant based milk and a few cozy optional customization suggestions, it's the perfect holiday sip.

The Best Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate

If there’s one thing I’m convinced of, it’s that everyone deserves a go-to hot chocolate recipe that feels a little luxurious without actually requiring… effort… but is way more delicious than those little packets from the store. This dairy-free version is my winter MVP. It’s silky, rich, not-too-sweet, and tastes like something you’d get at a boutique ski lodge here in Aspen, except it’s made with pantry staples and takes roughly the same amount of time as debating which holiday movie to put on (in my house, that’s about 5 minutes). Unsweetened soy milk keeps it extra creamy (truly unmatched), raw cacao brings that deep chocolate flavor, a few dairy-free bittersweet chips melt everything into velvet, and a splash of vanilla + a pinch of sea salt pull the whole thing together. Sweeten it with maple syrup, monkfruit, date syrup, whatever fits your vibe, and suddenly you’ve got a mug of pure joy.

And because options are the cornerstone of good living, go classic, or give it a festive twist. A hint of peppermint extract instantly turns it into cozy holiday magic, and if you’re feeling a little après, a shot of peppermint schnapps will absolutely do the trick. No judgment, it’s called balance. However you customize it, this is the kind of hot cocoa that makes you want to sit down, slow down, and savor every sip.

Origins of Hot Chocolate

This might surprise you, but hot chocolate is actually a really old drink, and it comes from somewhere you might not expect. Ancient Latin America! Cacao originates in the region and was traditionally consumed as a warm, spiced beverage that was often bitter, deeply rich and way less sweet than anything we drink today.  As cacao made its way across the globe, hot chocolate evolved into the sweeter, creamier drink we know now. This version brings things full circle, honoring the depth of cacao while keeping it cozy, accessible, and perfect for modern kitchens!

What Makes This Hot Chocolate Healthier?

This recipe skips heavy cream and refined sugar, relying instead on plant-based milk and natural sweeteners. Using unsweetened cocoa powder and bittersweet dairy-free chocolate chips means you control the sweetness while still getting a deeply chocolatey flavor. It’s also naturally vegan if you’re using a plant based milk and dairy free chocolate chips.

Ingredients for The Best Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

Each ingredient here plays an important role in creating a truly creamy, balanced cup.

  • Soy milk: This is my top choice for a thick, creamy texture. Soy milk has a richness that rivals dairy, making it ideal for a thick vegan hot chocolate.
  • Cacao powder: Raw, unsweetened cacao adds depth and a bold chocolate flavor.
  • Dairy-free chocolate chips: These melt into the milk, creating that luxurious thickness you expect from the best hot chocolate recipe!
  • Vanilla extract: Adds warmth and rounds out the chocolate.
  • Maple syrup: Use your sweetener of choice if you don’t want to use maple; here are a few other options: monkfruit, date syrup or agave nectar.
  • Sea salt: A small pinch makes all the flavors pop. Don’t skip it!

How to Make The Best Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

Making this cup of hot chocolate is quick and easy, and honestly smells amazing!

Combine Everything

Add the soy milk, cacao powder, dairy-free chocolate chips, vanilla, sweetener, and sea salt to a small saucepan.

Heat and Stir

Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir frequently. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then immediately reduce the heat. Continue stirring until the chocolate is fully melted and the drink is slightly thickened, about five minutes total.

Serve and Customize

Pour into mugs and add any optional mix-ins of your choice.

Ways to Customize Your Hot Chocolate

This recipe is endlessly adaptable. Swap soy milk for almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk, depending on what you have on hand. Coconut milk makes an especially rich dairy free hot cocoa, while almond milk keeps things lighter. Spice it up by adding a dash of cinnamon, chili powder, peppermint, or espresso powder for a more complex flavor. Top with dairy-free whipped cream and shaved chocolate for extra indulgence, and if you want to take indulgence to a whole other level, consider a splash of schnapps for a cozy, spiked hot cocoa moment!

Tips for Making The Best Hot Chocolate

  • Use unsweetened milk and cacao so you can control sweetness.
  • Whisk or stir continuously to prevent clumping.
  • Don’t overboil; gentle heat keeps the texture smooth and prevents scorching.
  • And if you want it extra thick, let it simmer just a bit longer, stirring constantly.

Why You’ll Love This Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

This recipe is the best because it doesn’t involve store-bought sachets that actually just taste like cocopowder and sugar half-hazardly thrown together. This drink is intentional, quick to make and uses ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen. It’s creamy without dairy, rich without being heavy, and customizable for any mood or occasion. Whether you’re making a vegan chocolate drink for yourself or serving guests, this one always delivers!
