These Blackened Tofu bowls are everything you could want from a weeknight meal. Quick, easy, and packed with smoky, spicy, fresh flavors. Thick tofu steaks are coated in a coconut aminos sauce and blackened seasoning, then seared until crispy and served over rice and massaged kale with pineapple jalapeño salsa and dairy-free lime crema for a colorful, satisfying dinner or meal prep lunch.

Blackened Tofu Bowls

Blackened anything has always had my heart.

Growing up, my parents made blackened salmon all the time, and even though I was never a huge meat or fish person, I loved that blackened seasoning. We were definitely a household that loved spice, and I think blackening is one of the best ways to bring a little heat without making something overwhelmingly spicy. It’s smoky, savory, a little fiery, and SO flavorful.

I especially love blackened seasoning paired with something cool and fresh to balance all of those bold spices, which is exactly what I wanted to do with this tofu bowl. I took that same technique I grew up loving and gave it the tofu treatment: thick tofu steaks coated with coconut aminos and my favorite blend of blackening spices, then seared in a hot skillet until they develop that deeply browned, smoky crust on the outside while staying tender in the middle.

And while these Blackened Tofu Steaks are absolutely good enough to eat straight out of the skillet, the bowl situation might be my favorite part!

I’m layering them over fluffy rice and massaged kale with a bright, juicy pineapple salsa and a cool dairy-free lime crema. You get smoky and spicy, sweet and tangy, creamy and fresh all in one bite. It’s colorful, packed with plants, and proof that you definitely don’t need salmon – or any meat at all – to get everything I loved about those blackened dinners growing up.

What is Blackened Seasoning?

Blackened seasoning, also called blackening seasoning, is a bold spice blend typically used to coat proteins before searing them in a hot skillet. It usually includes a mix of smoky, savory, and slightly spicy spices like paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, black pepper, thyme, oregano, and salt. The magic of a good blackened seasoning recipe is that it creates a deeply flavorful crust when it hits a hot pan. It’s not just spicy; it’s smoky, earthy, savory, peppery, and a little fiery.

Ingredients for Blackened Tofu Bowls

Every ingredient in this tofu bowl recipe brings texture, flavor, freshness, protein, or balance to the overall dish! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • High Protein Super Firm Tofu: This is my preferred tofu for this recipe because it holds its shape, slices cleanly into slabs, and doesn’t need as much pressing as regular tofu. It also has a denser, meatier texture that works beautifully for tofu steaks. If you’re using firm or extra-firm tofu, press it first to remove excess water.
  • Coconut Aminos: Add salty-sweet umami flavor and help the seasoning stick to the tofu. They also keep this recipe gluten-free.
  • Maple Syrup: Balances the smoky spice of the blackened seasoning and helps the tofu develop a beautiful caramelized crust in the pan.
  • Blackened Seasoning: This is where the bold flavor comes from. A good blackened rub gives the tofu smoky, savory, spicy depth and creates that signature dark crust when seared.

Pineapple Jalapeño Salsa

  • Fresh Pineapple: Brings juicy sweetness and brightness that perfectly contrasts the blackened seasoning. It brightens everything and makes it feel lighter.
  • Red Onion: Adds sharpness and crunch to the salsa. If you find red onion too strong, soak it for a few minutes in water after chopping and before adding it to the salsa.
  • Jalapeño: Perfect for a hit of heat, which you can control by leaving seeds in or removing them completely.
  • Cilantro: Adds freshness and a bright herby note that works beautifully with lime, pineapple, and blackened tofu.
  • Avocado: Adds creaminess and healthy fats and helps mellow out some of the other ingredients. Use avocado that is ripe but still slightly firm, so it holds its shape.
  • Cherry Tomatoes: For juicy sweetness and color.
  • Lime Juice: Brightens the salsa and crema. It adds acidity, balances sweetness, and ties the whole bowl together.
  • Cumin and Garlic Powder: These add a savory, earthy backbone to the pineapple salsa so it doesn’t taste overly sweet.

To Serve

  • Jasmine Rice: As the base of these tofu bowls, rice makes the bowl hearty and satisfying. It catches the crema, salsa juices, and any extra seasoning from the tofu.
  • Tuscan Kale: Necessary for a little greenery and texture. Massaging it with lemon, olive oil, and salt makes it tender and flavorful. Click here to learn how to massage your kale to perfection!

What Kind Of Tofu Should I Use?

For this recipe, I would definitely go with high protein super firm tofu. Super firm tofu is already pressed, dense, and sturdy, which means it slices into clean tofu steaks and holds up well in a hot skillet. It also gets crispy on the outside without falling apart.

If you can’t find super firm tofu, use extra-firm tofu instead. Press it for 15–20 minutes before slicing, so it isn’t too wet. Too much moisture will prevent the seasoning from sticking and make it harder to get that crispy blackened crust.

How To Make Blackened Tofu Bowls

Slice and Dry the Tofu

Slice the tofu into 8 thick slabs and blot each piece dry with a paper towel. This step helps the tofu sear instead of steam. The drier the surface, the better the seasoning will stick and the crispier the edges will get.

Coat with Coconut Aminos, Maple, and Seasoning

Whisk the coconut aminos and maple syrup together in a small bowl. Brush each piece of tofu lightly on all sides, then generously sprinkle with blackened seasoning. Don’t be shy here. You want a nice coating on each piece so the tofu gets that bold, smoky crust.

Sear Until Crispy

Heat a large cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tbsp of cooking oil or a splash of water to coat the pan. Cooking oil will give you the crispiest texture, but water works if you want to keep it oil-free. Add the tofu in a single layer and cook untouched for 4–5 minutes, basting with additional sauce as they’re cooking. This is important. Let it sit so the crust can form. Flip and repeat on the other side until the tofu is deeply browned and crisp. You should see that beautiful blackened coating on the outside and can continue to baste with sauce.

Make the Pineapple Jalapeño Salsa & Crema

While the tofu cooks, make your salsa and crema! Combine the pineapple, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, avocado, cherry tomatoes, lime juice, cumin, garlic powder, maple syrup, and sea salt in a bowl. Stir gently so you don’t turn the avocado to mush, then taste and adjust as needed. Set the salsa aside, then whisk together the dairy-free yogurt, lime juice, maple syrup, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl.

Build the Bowls

Add the cooked rice and massaged kale to each bowl. Top with the blackened tofu, pineapple salsa, and a drizzle of lime crema. Serve immediately while the tofu is warm and crispy!

How To Serve Blackened Tofu

These bowls are my favorite way to serve blackened tofu, but there are so many options.

Serve it over rice, quinoa, greens, roasted sweet potatoes, or cauliflower rice. Add it to wraps, grain bowls, or salads. Want to turn the blackened tofu into tacos? My Blackened “Fish” Tacos will blow your mind!

For meal prep, store the tofu, rice, kale, salsa, and crema separately. The tofu will soften slightly in the fridge, but it still tastes delicious. Reheat it in a skillet or air fryer to bring back some of the crispiness.

This is a great meal prep recipe because the components hold up well and can be mixed and matched throughout the week. Make the tofu and rice ahead, prep the salsa, and keep the crema in a jar. Then build bowls for a quick dinner or meal prep lunch.

Blackened Tofu FAQ

Can I make my own blackened seasoning? Yes. A simple blackened seasoning recipe usually includes smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, black pepper, dried thyme, dried oregano, and salt. Adjust the cayenne depending on how spicy you want it.

Is blackened tofu spicy? It has a little heat, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly spicy. The spice level depends on your blackened seasoning. The pineapple salsa and lime crema help cool everything down and balance the heat.

Can I make this ahead of time? Yes. Prep the rice, kale, salsa, crema, and tofu ahead of time and store everything separately. Reheat the tofu in a skillet or air fryer before serving for the best texture.

Pineapple Jalapeño Salsa Ingredients
  • 2 cups fresh pineapple, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup cilantro, chopped
  • ½ avocado, cubed (not too ripe)
  • ½ cup cherry tomatoes, diced
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
To Serve Ingredients
  • 1 cup jasmine rice, cooked according to package
  • 1 bunch Tuscan kale, chopped
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • 1 tsp olive oil, optional
  • salt
Crema Ingredients
  • 1 cup plain, unsweetened, dairy-free yogurt
  • ½ lime, juiced
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • pinch of salt

Method

  1. Slice the tofu into 8 slabs and blot dry with a paper towel.
  2. Whisk the coconut aminos and maple syrup together and brush each piece of tofu to lightly coat (reserve extra liquid). Generously sprinkle with the blackened seasoning on all sides - don't be shy.
  3. Heat a large cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium heat and add 1 tbsp of cooking oil or water to coat. Cooking oil is best for extra crispiness, but you can definitely make it oil-free.
  4. Add the tofu in a single layer and cook untouched for 4-5 minutes, basting with the extra sauce. Flip and repeat on the other side, basting again. It should be nice and crisp! *Flavor tip: Pouring a little melted butter (~1 tbsp) over the tofu steaks while they're cooking will enhance the flavor and texture even further.*
  5. While it cooks, make the salsa by combining all the ingredients in a bowl and seasoning to taste.
  6. Prepare the crema by whisking together the yogurt, lime juice, maple syrup and salt.
  7. Drizzle the kale with lemon juice and olive oil and massage for 15-30 seconds until tender.
  8. Add the rice and kale to a bowl and top with blackened tofu. Add salsa and drizzle with crema.

Notes

If you're not using high-protein, super-firm tofu, press extra-firm or firm tofu for 15-20 minutes.
